The Montana State JATC currently has Forty registered apprentices in the program. We have graduated ten this year and are looking to have another large First year group. We will be establishing applicant lists in the Bozeman, Helena, Missoula and Butte areas. Notification letters have been sent out and radio ads are currently running. Please have anyone interested in applying contact the JATC.
The JATC would like to congratulate Will Hayes on his second-place finish in the HVAC division at the Western regional contest in Portland. Thanks goes out to Chris Schaff, Pat Harmon and John Carter who helped with the judging and proctoring of the event. Also, Alex Harmon, Dan Peterson and Matt Peterson did an outstanding job representing our JATC.
We would like to welcome Jeffery Adkins (B&B), Timothy Fite (NORPAC), Zack Kunz (NORPAC), Kara McConnell (Central), Hayden Boslough-Moore (NORPAC) and Kevin McCuin (Empire) as new apprentices to the program.
Stephen Klippenes has just completed the ITI’s Instructor 101 course. This intense six day training focuses on fundamentals of teaching and lesson plans. Dan Love completed the ITI’s Instructor Mind Tap webinar on new Service Curriculum and how to present the new curriculum to the apprentices. The JATC has submitted its accreditation criteria to the ITI for review expects to have the results sometime in July.
Apprentices are reminded of the importance of having your OJT forms in on time to prevent delays in upgrades and to call the JATC if there have been any changes in phone numbers, addresses, or emails.
The next JATC meeting is scheduled to be on August 23rd,2019 in Butte at 10:00am. The Board will set the budget and approve the class schedule for 2019-2020 year. Apprentices will be notified after the meeting on when they will be attending school.
Have a safe summer!

A Note From John....
At many of the last meetings and conferences that have been held by the International, questions have been asked on how do we stay ahead of the changes in the Sheet Metal industry? Those questions have been asked time and again as the industry moves forward. Every time a new tool, piece of equipment or construction process comes out it presents new opportunities for us to gain market share. As members, we need to be prepared to utilize all the new tools and methods that make us the one the shops look at to perform that work. At first glance we may think those things will take away work from members. A burn table means less members in the shop laying out fittings. Improved field methods mean less members in the field. However, nothing could be further from the truth! Fewer members laying out fittings means more members installing them. Fewer members at one jobsite, means more members at multiple jobsites. Some of you that have been in the trade awhile should think back and share with our younger members the changes you’ve seen. Ask yourself, ‘what will the industry look like in another twenty years?’ All the area JATC’s have access to training that keep our membership on the forefront of the industry. We as members must be ready to obtain and use that training to our advantage. Contact your area JATC to ask about or request any training that will continue to keep you the best Sheet Metal Worker in the industry.
