The Montana State JATC is entering into the apprentices third week of classes. Except for first year who will be starting their second. We would like to welcome our new apprentices they are Chad Barrett (B&B Heating), Spenser Mellinger (Brennan’s), Lathan Golding and Daygan Cross both at Metal Works. This brings the total number of first year apprentices to seventeen. The largest class to date. Congratulations goes out to Shawn Lawson who has just completed the program. We wish him the best in his Journeyman Detailing Career.
There were twenty-five participants at the SMACNA Seismic Bracing Class presented by Eli Howard in Bozeman. Eli brought the group up to speed on what is required in different earthquake zones and how to read the SMACNA Seismic manual.
The JATC attended the FFA’s State Convention as part of National Apprenticeship week. It was a great opportunity to meet with a hundred and twenty young men and women to talk about the advantage’s apprenticeship has to offer young rural individuals. We will also be giving a presentation to Helena High School Welding Classes in February to encourage students to become apprentices. Two of our first-year apprentices came out of this welding program.
The JATC is pleased to announce Stephen Klippenes has decided to take on the position of Welding Instructor. Steve will be a great asset to the organization and will definitely move the program forward. Welding classes will be held on Fridays and anyone wanting to attend should contact the JATC for sign up.
There will be a JATC Board Meeting held per conference call on February 22nd, 2019, and a Montana Training Directors’ meeting in Helena on January 5th, 2019.
The JATC would like to wish all members and contractors a prosperous 2019.

A Note From John....
With another year behind us and a new one ahead of us, it’s time to look forward and decide where we want to be in the future. Local 103 is seeing near 100% employment as are most locals across the country. That brings challenges we have not seen in quite a while. First is getting the number of members needed to fill calls for work going on now. Second is getting the numbers of members needed to fill calls for future projects. So far we have been able to move members from shop to shop to man current projects. As work increases this spring that may not cover all our needs. With locals across the country looking for workers our ability to bring in travelers is limited. In order to meet our current and future needs we are working now to bring in new members to man work and increase our membership numbers. You can help by letting those workers we do not yet represent know the advantages of being a member when you see them at the supply house or any other place.
Now is the time to pull together to make your Local 103 thrive into 2019 and beyond.
